FISHERMAN SHIRT
SPRING 2024
For this project, I chose the 20th-century fisherman shirt as my starting point. It is a loose-fitting shirt with a collar and a pocket on the inside of the garment. Additionally, the shirt has been constructed using only flat-felled seams making it fully reversible. After researching the history of the fisherman’s shirt, I became interested in how the fishing industry has changed over the years. Early on fishing was done with small boats and hooks and rods were used to capture the fish, while today it’s done with big industrial boats and nets. It made me reflect on the negative effect this has had on the world. Today, overfishing is a huge problem. In 2022, over 35% of fishing stocks worldwide were overfished. Therefore, with my project, I want to comment on this issue by combining the early versions of the fisherman shirt with the modern-day fisherman jacket, showing how much the industry has evolved. The underlayer is based on a fisherman shirt but in an oversized porportion, and the overlayer is based on a modern fisher man jacket but deconstructed. The shirt features drawstring elements, referencing the nets used when fishing.
